UPDATE: Boston Terrier found on the side of Hwy 3 being rehomed

(Update: Feb. 7, 2024): A dog that was found in the ditch along Hwy 3 near Christina Lake on Monday evening is going to a new home.

Andrés Dean found “Coryell” between Paulson Bridge and Lafferty Pit Road. He says it was “rather incredible” that he saw the Boston Terrier at all, because it was dark and rainy. The dog was obviously cold and was amongst a pile of broken ice chunks with no collar or tattoo to identify her.

Dean had reached out to a Boston Terrier breeder in the area, who said the dog was not one of theirs. He also posted the dog on Facebook, amassing over one thousand shares, but no new information.

However, this morning, he was able to confirm who the rightful owner most likely is. Another breeder elsewhere in BC contacted him about the dog saying they sold it to someone in Christina Lake.

After some investigation, Dean says it’s time to rehome the dog, whose real name is Elly, to a loving family where she’ll have a fresh start.

He says he already is in discussion with an adopter, and will be meeting them and arranging a visit to a veterinarian to finish the hand-off.

(Original story: Feb. 6, 2024):

A man is hoping to find the rightful owner of a dog he found in the ditch last night along Highway 3.

Andrés Dean told KelownaNow that he was making his way down Highway 3, and in the ditch between Paulson Bridge and Lafferty Pit Road he saw a small dog.

He says it was “rather incredible” that he saw the Boston Terrier at all, because it was dark and rainy. The dog was obviously cold and was amongst a pile of broken ice chunks with no collar or tattoo to identify her.

Now that the dog is safe and warm, Dean says it appears to have been well taken care of. She seems healthy, happy, and well fed, and only has a small cut on her neck and roughed up paws from the elements.

Sadly, the trail has run cold in the search for the owners.

Dean says he had a lead about a Boston Terrier breeder in Christina Lake, but when he reached out it was confirmed the dog wasn’t one of theirs. He took the dog to a vet’s office, but the dog did not have a microchip either. The staff at the clinic estimated that she could be between one and two-years-old.

In the meantime, the lost dog has been temporarily named Coryell, after an old train station in the area.

Dean says the spot he found Coryell was remote, and would be a bizarre place to stop, but there is a possibility that the dog bolted after a collision.

After sharing a post on Facebook that has been shared over 1,000 times without any further leads, hope that the owner will be found is decreasing.

The West Kootenay SPCA was also informed, but said they have not received any reports of a missing Boston Terrier, but will be sharing the information with their other offices.

On whether he’ll adopt Coryell if the owner is not found, Dean says the little Boston Terrier wouldn’t be able to keep up with his cattle dogs and outdoorsy lifestyle.

The good news is that 30 to 40 people have messaged him offering to take Coryell in, and a vetting process and a proper vet check-up will be the next step.

If you are the owner, or know the owner, of Coryell, please email news@kelownanow.com.
