Several BC youth were arrested Halloween night after fireworks were reportedly directed at and set off at police officers and their vehicles.
BC Mounties received several calls reporting fireworks being shot at people, homes and vehicles in a neighbourhood in the Squamish area.
While patrolling the area, RCMP officers located around 100 youth allegedly setting off illegal fireworks, lighting fires and causing mischief.
According to a news release, a number of the youth were allegedly physically and verbally aggressive towards police and some were in possession of bear spray, bear bangers, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and wearing balaclavas.
“This is not a case of kids being kids, the group or mob mentality took over and the lack of regard for any direction or guidance to leave the area were largely ignored,” says Squamish RCMP S/Sgt. Gareth Bradley.
“This is a very concerning trend and it is out of pure luck that no one was hurt from the explosive devices.”
The Squamish RCMP arrested several youth and later released them into the care of their parents and/or guardians.
The news release says no charges have been laid but an investigation is ongoing.
All of the fireworks, bear spray and IEDs were seized and will be safely disposed of.
