It’s been a month since BC Parks closed all the provincial parks in British Columbia and those who have followed the order are itching to start exploring them again.
Today, Premier John Horgan announced British Columbia’s restart plan and it identifies two important dates for provincial parks.
On Thursday, May 14, the most provincial parks will open again for day use, but overnight stays will not be allowed.
Camping in provincial parks will be permitted again, with some exceptions, starting on Monday, June 1.
Park users will still be required to practice physical distancing and if there are recreation sites and trails that can’t accommodate that, they may not open.
“Parks and recreation sites that can safely provide existing service levels, such as garbage disposal and washroom facilities, will do so,” said a statement from the provincial government.
However, some areas and facilities, like playgrounds, picnic shelters and visitor centres, will remain closed.
“Our priority is providing safe access and services to people throughout the province, while maintaining the safety of park staff and park operators,” the statement said.
The BC Parks website will have more information on the status of camping in provincial parks in the coming days.
