The BC Highway Patrol’s Campbell River branch is investigating a fatal highway crash that happened on Vancouver Island last week.
Police say the multi-vehicle collision happened on Hwy 19A near Fanny Bay, south of Courtenay and west of both Denman and Hornby Islands, on Thursday afternoon.
Two of the vehicles involved were towing trailers, a BCHP release noted.
One man was “badly injured” in the crash and has since succumbed to his injuries, while another person was arrested at the scene.
Investigators say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the fatal crash, but the suspect has since been released as the probe continues.
The BCHP is now seeking witnesses or motorists with relevant dash cam footage from Hwy 19A around the time of the crash.
Specifically, Cpl. Brett Urano says investigators are honing in on witnesses and footage from “Hwy 19A in Fanny Bay, between the Fanny Bay Wharf and the Rosewall log sort.”
“If you were travelling in this area on July 31 between the hours of 3:30 pm and 4:15 pm and have not yet spoken to an investigator, please contact us at 250-286-3690,” Urano urged.
Neither the victim or suspect has been identified by police and the probe remains in its infancy at this time.
