An overnight fire has taken out several Prince George businesses.
Prince George Fire Rescue crews rushed to the scene in the Northwood Plaza complex along the John Hart Highway around 2:20 am today.
“Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke coming from the roof,” noted a media release issued by the City of Prince George.
“Fire crews initiated an aggressive interior attack to confine the fire, however, were forced into a defensive posture as heavy flames within the roof made conditions extremely dangerous.”
The release notes that several businesses within the complex were spared from heavy fire damage, but sadly that was not the case for all of them.
The Northwood Plaza Hotel and Nelly’s Pub are said to have been destroyed by the fire, and the loss of the latter as a popular community hub has residents reeling today.
“Our hearts are heavy, this pub means everything to our family,” said a short statement from owners of Nelly’s Pub, noting that they’re thankful everyone is safe after the blaze.
“We appreciate everyone who has reached out, we are overwhelmed by the support already shown by our community. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we navigate the next steps.”
Other affected businesses in the complex like Madison Ave Fashions and Style You Up have also taken to social media to share that they’ll be closed until further notice as they assess the situation and damage.
According to the City, damage from the destructive blaze is estimated at $1,000,000 and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
