Over $114K in contraband seized from BC prison

An investigation has been launched after a significant amount of contraband was seized at a BC prison.

A news release from the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says the “vigilance” of staff members led to the seizure, which had an estimated value of $114,500.

That includes THC concentrate, methamphetamine, tobacco and SD cards and card readers.

The contraband was seized from Matsqui Institution, which is located in Abbotsford.

“The (CSC) uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions,” the release notes.

“These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.”

According to the release, the CSC says they are heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering prisons to ensure a safe and secure environment.

The CSC says works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.

A tip line has also been set up for all federal institutions so CSC may receive information about activities such as this. That toll-free number is 1‑866‑780‑3784 and helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.
