June 15, 2011 remains one of the darker days in Vancouver’s history.
The clock wound down on a devastating game seven loss for the Vancouver Canucks, with the Boston Bruins hoisting the Stanley Cup after a 4-0 win.
Much like in 1994, it didn’t take long for the riots to break out in downtown Vancouver in what would become a very long night for police officers and firefighters.
Cars were lit on fire, buildings were broken into and a total of 140 people were reported as injured, which included four stabbings and nine wounded police officers.
That night, 101 people were arrested and over the coming weeks, months and years, 887 charges were laid against 301 people.
The images from that night are mesmerizing, but will forever be a stain on Vancouver and the Canucks.
Not counting the unexciting four game sweep in 1982, maybe third time will be a charm for Vancouver next time the Canucks make it into a Stanley Cup Final that goes the wire.
