The lengthy process to make permanent repairs to the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) through the Fraser Canyon will begin soon.
The Province anticipates construction work to restore the stretch of highway to its previous capacity will be ongoing until 2024.
Contracts for development and early construction work for the permanent repairs have been awarded to:
"We have made exceptional progress in restoring our highway networks from November's storms, and these contract awards are another significant step," said Rob Fleming, minister of transportation and infrastructure.
"Over the last year, I have witnessed the remarkable dedication of our ministry staff, contractors, Indigenous and municipal leaders, and people from all walks of life who have come together to support the recovery from the unprecedented floods.”
Projects will be completed through a collaborative construction mode, the Province explained.
That means the Ministry and contractors will work together to complete the design and construction of the repairs, which includes shared risks and incentives.
Similar work on the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) has been ongoing for weeks and crews are making good progress on the Bottletop, Juliet and Jessica Bridges.
“Early work on these sections of the Coquihalla is expected to be substantially complete this winter,” the Province noted.
“This work will create temporary four-lane access on the Coquihalla in these areas while the permanent construction is undertaken.”
Crews are also making considerable progress on Hwy 8, which has allowed all residents in the area that was devastated by last fall’s storms to return home.
