Police confirm 3 men dead after fishing boat capsizes in BC waters

Three people are dead following a tragic incident just off the British Columbia coast.

Around 11 pm Thursday, Powell River RCMP received a report from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) that a fishing boat had capsized in the northern part of the Strait of Georgia.

According to police, the personal vessel ran into trouble around 500-1,000 metres off the shore of Savary Island.

“It was reported that two men had made it to shore, while three others remained missing,” an RCMP release explained.

Search and rescue resources were deployed, as the JRCC had been alerted around 10 pm that the vessel failed to return to Lund Harbour as expected.

Resources involved in the ocean search included a Powell River Coast Guard lifeboat, an inshore fast rescue craft from Cortez Bay and an Airforce Kingfisher aircraft from Comox.

Mounties from Powell River conducted shoreline searches with the assistance of Savary Island Fire crews.

Sadly, the three missing men were found dead late Thursday night.

The two survivors were brought back to Powell River where they were assessed and transported to hospital by Emergency Health Services.

The RCMP says the men were fishing for clams on Thursday.
