Police say man charged after holding child over hotel balcony in Whistler

Mounties in Whistler say a man has been charged with abandoning a child and failing to provide the necessaries of life over allegations he held the child over a balcony at a hotel.

Police say on the evening of Canada Day 2024, officers were approached by bystanders who said they saw the man with the child and witnesses reported hearing a woman screaming inside the hotel room.

Mounties initially apprehended the pair under the Mental Health Act, while the child received medical care.

The RCMP say the 45-year-old man, who is not a Whistler resident, was charged on Canada Day this year.

Police say in a news release that the disturbance was "highly visible" as it happened during Canada Day celebrations and they thanked the witnesses who alerted officers.

It says "their co-operation and actions were key that day in saving a child’s life."
