Pregnant BC woman seriously injured after ‘large rock’ smashes through Tesla windshield

Vancouver Police (VPD) are investigating another case of potential vandalism against a Tesla.

This time around, the incident resulted in a pregnant woman suffering serious injuries.

According to a VPD release, the pregnant woman was in the passenger seat of a Tesla as it travelled northbound on Nanaimo Street around 8:45 pm on Sunday, March 30.

As the vehicle passed East 27th Avenue, a "large rock" weighing about two pounds smashed through the windshield and struck the woman.

“We are working to determine whether this was a criminal act, and if someone intentionally targeted this Tesla,” said Sgt. Steve Addison. “This very serious incident could easily have resulted in someone’s death, but for a few inches.”

Investigators have examined the vehicle, and the rock that ended up on the floorboard in front of the passenger seat, and canvassed the neighbourhood for additional evidence.

However, the VPD says it has yet to be determined where the rock came from or what caused it to strike the Tesla.

While the pregnant woman’s injuries were considered serious, they’re fortunately non-life-threatening and she is currently recovering.

The VPD is urging any potential witnesses, or those with relevant dash cam footage from the area that night, to phone police at 604-717-4021.

Just two days before this incident, the VPD announced that it would be deploying over 130 additional officers in response to multiple Tesla protests planned around the Lower Mainland.

The force said investigators were probing 28 incidents at dealerships and charging stations since US President Donald Trump’s inauguration day on Jan. 20.

The VPD noted that they appear to be politically motivated and in opposition of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s affiliation with the US government.

Nine mischiefs since January have been linked to people’s opposition to the US political landscape, the VPD added, which includes rocks and liquid being thrown at cars, wipers being damaged and racist symbols being written on vehicles.
