Prince George RCMP confirm human remains link back to 1990 homicide

Back in October, the Prince George RCMP's serious crime unit entered into an investigation of found human remains that were located by a member of the public on Connaught Hill.

With the assistance of the BC Coroners Service, the RCMP can publicly confirm that the human remains are of Donna Charlie, who was the victim of a 1990 homicide.

In May 1991, Jerry Smaaslet, former boyfriend of Charlie, was convicted of murdering her in early September 1990. However, the conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeal. In May 1995, Smaaslet pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

"Though this initial investigation resulted in a conviction, it remained an open file with our Missing Person Unit until such time as the last of the remains were located," said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Operator for Prince George RCMP.

The family of the victim has been notified of this discovery.
