RCMP confirm you cannot be fined for riding in a vehicle with people from different households

While socializing other in people's homes remains against COVID-19 restrictions, travelling in different cars is not.

On Friday, Surrey RCMP confirmed that officers are not fining people for such an offence after rumours had been circulating.

According to Cpl. Joanie Sidhu with Surrey RCMP, there is no enforcement power to issue a violation ticket to anyone who is in a vehicle with someone who is not from their household.

Officers can only inform and educate the public about the health orders in this particular case.

Meanwhile, people riding BC Transit are now required to wear a mask for the entirety of their trip.

Under recent provincial orders, face masks are now required to be worn by all British Columbians, 12 years and older, in a number of indoor public settings, including:

  • malls, shopping centres, coffee shops, and retail and grocery stores
  • liquor and drug stores
  • airports, city halls, libraries, community and recreation centres
  • restaurants, pubs and bars
  • places of public worship
  • on public transportation, in a taxi or ride-sharing vehicle
  • common areas of office buildings, courthouses, hospitals and hotels
  • common areas of sport and fitness centres when not engaged in physical activity
  • common areas of post-secondary institutions and non-profit organizations

Dr. Bonnie Henry is scheduled to host a media briefing on Friday afternoon.
