Semi driver detained for impaired driving after crash that closed BC Hwy 1

The driver of a semi truck that crashed in Abbotsford and shut down the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) on Monday night is suspected to have been impaired.

Emergency crews responded to the single-vehicle crash near the Whatcom Road exit shortly after 8 pm.

A preliminary investigation determined that the semi was travelling westbound when it veered into the centre median, crossed into oncoming eastbound traffic and rolled over.

The 66-year-old man behind the wheel of the semi was detained at the scene for impaired driving. He was then transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Once cleared medically, the man was released from police custody pending further investigation and the return of lab results.

In the meantime, investigators are asking anyone with information on this crash to reach out to Abbotsford police at 604-859-5225.

That includes witnesses or those with dash cam footage of the crash and the semi’s driving behaviour leading up to that moment.

The westbound lanes of Hwy 1 reopened around 9:40 pm Monday and the road fully reopened around 11:30 pm.
