Speeding impaired driver nearly hits BC cop doing roadside enforcement: police

Police say it’s fortunate an officer who was doing roadside speed enforcement wasn’t hit by a vehicle that was directed to pull over.

According to the RCMP, it happened at Robertson Crescent and 242 Street in Langley Monday night, where the speed limit is 60 km/h.

The driver, police said, was travelling 93 km/h, and initially slowed down when flagged to the side of the road by an officer.

They then seemingly changed their mind.

“Instead of stopping safely, they swerved off the roadway to the right of the officer and accelerated to well over 100 km/h,” an RCMP release explained.

“Another officer, who witnessed the dangerous maneuver, was able to intercept the vehicle before it reached the driver’s residence.”

Several punishments were handed down to the driver:

  • A 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition
  • A 30-day vehicle impound
  • 11 charges under the BC Motor Vehicle Act, totaling $2,035 in fines
  • $8,225 in Driver Penalty Points

“This incident highlights the very real dangers impaired and reckless drivers pose, not only to the public, but to police officers doing their jobs roadside,” Sgt. Zynal Sharoom said through a media release.

“If you choose to drink and drive, you are not only risking lives, but you are setting yourself up to face serious financial and legal consequences.”
