One of BC’s most well known grizzly bears has woken up from his months-long winter nap.
Boo the bear, who is a resident at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort grizzly refuge outside of Golden, woke up on April 4.
The 23-year-old bear started prepping for hibernation in late November.
According to the resort, Boo is 112 pounds lighter but is still weighing in at a healthy 758 pounds.
“While his main habitat is getting spring-ready, Boo is currently cruising between his den and ISO area,” the resort posted on social media. “If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of him in the mornings – but shh, he’s still shaking off that snooze.”
The team shared a video of Boo enjoying the sunshine, rolling in the snow and enjoying a snack.
Boo was orphaned alongside his sibling, Cari, after their mother was shot and killed by a poacher in 2002.
The two five-month-old bear cubs, who were named after BC’s Cariboo Mountains, were brought to the 20-acre refuge, which was built specifically for them.
Sadly, Cari did not wake up from his first hibernation, the resort’s website explains.
Although Boo lost his family members so early, the resort says he has thrived at the resort.
He also provided a lot of information on his species, which is a blue-listed and sensitive to human activity and threatened by habitat loss.
“Observations about foraging, play, sleep, social skills, and many other activities are recorded daily,” the website says. “The cubs’ development was the subject of one researcher’s Master’s thesis.”
The resort has an interpretive centre where people can get a chance to watch Boo in his natural habitat.
Boo’s habitat isn’t quite ready for the public but updates will be announced on the resort’s social media accounts, including Facebook.
