UPDATE: Grizzly mauling in BC was 'surprise defensive attack,' bear will not be captured

(UPDATE: Sept. 30 @ 5:30 am): A grizzly bear attack near Burns Lake on Wednesday was a "surprise defensive attack," the Conservation Officer Service (COS) has said.

As a consequence, no attempt will be made to capture the bear, the COS explained.

The agency said the victim, a man, had been in the area to photograph bears.

"The area is known as a viewing location for bears, especially during salmon spawning season," the COS explained.

The man was walking along an access road to the Fulton River Spawning Channel when he was attacked at about 7 am.

He suffered serious injuries to his arm and was taken to hospital in Prince George for treatment.

"While grizzly bear attacks are rare, the COS encourages the public to take precautions in case of any wildlife encounters," the agency said in a statement.

"Remember to be aware of your surroundings, carry bear spray, travel in groups, make noise to avoid surprising a bear, and more."
