Week-long lockdown, 'exceptional' search at BC prison ends with contraband seizures

A week-long lockdown at a medium-security prison ended with several items being seized.

According to Correction Service Canada (CSC), the lockdown at the Mountain Institution in the Lower Mainland began on Mar. 21.

The lockdown was ordered to staff at the prison should carry out “an exceptional search.”

“The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates,” CSC said.

During the lockdown, visits were suspended.

By Mar. 27, the lockdown at the Agassiz facility was lifted and normal operations resumed.

“During the exceptional search, contraband and unauthorized items were seized which included cell phones, phone chargers, and methamphetamines,” said a news release issued late last week.

“The CSC is strengthening measures to prevent the entry of contraband into its institutions in order to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.”
