Woman dead, 2 in critical condition after early-morning crash on BC Hwy 1

A multi-vehicle crash on Hwy 1 near the Sprott Street off-ramp in Burnaby claimed a woman’s life on Sunday.

Police say the fatal collision happened around 3:45 am after an eastbound vehicle with four passengers inside pulled over and stopped on the side of the highway.

While stopped, it was struck by an SUV that was also travelling eastbound.

A female passenger in the vehicle that was struck was declared dead when emergency crews arrived at the scene.

Three other female passengers from that vehicle were transported to hospital, with two of them in critical condition.

Police noted that the driver of the SUV was released from the scene with minor injuries, but did not provide any information on the condition of the first vehicle’s driver.

The RCMP also said that impairment is not believed to be a factor in the collision.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of everyone involved,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj. “This is a tragedy that will affect so many.”

Officers spoke to several witnesses at the scene, but are urging anyone with dash cam footage of the collision, or the lead-up to it, to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.
