Young mom and baby killed by falling tree at BC lake

An unthinkably tragic incident unfolded at a lake on Vancouver Island Thursday afternoon.

The RCMP says emergency personnel were called to Comox Lake around 1:45 pm after a tree fell on a 26-year-old woman and her five-month-old child.

A social media post from the Lake Park Society indicates that the incident happened at the Cumberland Lake Park Campground.

Despite the efforts of first responders, the young mother was pronounced dead at the scene.

The baby was transported to hospital, but sadly succumbed to its injuries.

Police say no criminality is suspected, but the Comox Valley RCMP will work with the BC Coroners Service to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths.

“Out of respect for the family, and given the sensitive nature of this loss, no further details will be released,” an RCMP statement said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected and thank the bystanders who stepped in to help under heartbreaking circumstances.”
