$6M private island in BC with luxury home, guest cabins and more hits the market

A unique luxury real estate opportunity has hit the market in BC.

Off Vancouver Island sits Pym Island, a private five-acre property with a custom home built for royalty. Pym Island is close to Sidney, and is listed for a cool $6 million.

Granted, that price tag comes with more than the average multi-million dollar property these days. Pym Island not only comes with a luxurious four bedroom home, it also has separate guest cottages, a caretaker’s residence and a tennis court.

The home itself features cedar roofing and framing, oak and marble floors, fireplaces of stone and wood, a formal dining room, library, games room, his and hers masters with study and ensuites, a cooks kitchen, an atrium feature, an indoor pool and a self-contained guest wing. The home has four bedrooms and four bathrooms.

Photos of the home are featured in real estate articles, and on high end real estate website Sotheby’s International Realty.

The home has been listed in the past as well, including in 2012 for a total of $5.6 million. According to HuffPost Canada, the realtor who listed the property at that time believed it was built in the 1970s by a concert pianist, however the records were lost so the story is a bit of a mystery.

However, Read says in an old listing for property that the small island was named after Lieutenant Frederick Whiteford Pym, of the Royal Navy.

“Pym was a mate on the Artic exploring vessel Assistance under the command of Captain Sir Edward Belcher,” Read says. “The Assistance accompanied Captain Richards in the polar regions in search of Sir John Franklin, 1852-1854. The Assistance had to be abandoned after being trapped in ice. The crew returned home on other vessels in 1854. Island named by Captain Richards, H.M.S Plumper, circa 1858.”

The realtor also said that the island is not as remote as it seems—it’s connected to the electrical grid, and all you need is a boat or a float plane to commute to Vancouver Island.
