UPDATE: Hwy 1 reopens near Revelstoke after fatal semi crash

(UPDATE: 8:50 a.m.) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) has reopened west of Revelstoke.

The road was closed following a fatal collision between two semis on Monday night.

There are still heavy delays expected in the area as traffic is released in a staggered manner.

(Original story: 6:45 a.m.) - One person is dead and the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) remains closed between Sicamous and Revelstoke after a Tuesday night crash.

The accident happened at 8 p.m. about 25 kilometres west of Revelstoke and involved a pair of commercial tractor-trailers, which both suffered extensive damage.

The driver of one truck died on scene, while the other was transported to Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke.

It nearly got worse around 9 p.m. when another tractor trailer was unable to stop for other vehicles that had stopped for the original incident.

The semi rear-ended another tractor trailer that was stopped at the scene and caused extensive damage, although no more injuries were reported.

The highway remains closed while an RCMP traffic analyst is examining the scene to determine the cause of the original accident.

DriveBC’s estimated time for the road to reopen is 8 a.m.
