UPDATE: Hwy 1 partially reopens through the Fraser Canyon after fiery morning crash

(UPDATE: Sept. 5 @ 1 pm) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) is now open to single-lane alternating traffic through the Fraser Canyon.

"Expect delays as congestion eases," DriveBC warned in an update.

Hwy 1 and the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) have both reopened in some form over the past hour, giving motorists heading between the BC Interior and Lower Mainland more travel options as the weekend begins.

(UPDATE: Sept. 5 @ 12:10 pm) - Although the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) remains closed through the Fraser Canyon, the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) is once again open after being shut down for nearly 48 hours.

Both Hwy 5 and Hwy 3 are available as major route options for motorists travelling between the BC Interior and Lower Mainland while Hwy 1 is closed.

(UPDATE: Sept. 5 @ 10 am) - The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) says the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) will remain closed in the Fraser Canyon "for the balance of the day."

The closure comes after a fiery crash shortly after 6 am, just south of Yale, that saw a semi and pickup collide head-on.

According to the BCHP, the semi driver is unhurt, but the pickup driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Through a media release, Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said investigators are making progress, but need more witnesses and dash cam footage to "get a complete picture of what happened."

“It’s also critical that drivers are as patient as possible despite multiple highway closures in the area," he added. "We understand that major highway shutdowns cause major inconvenience, but we don’t want anyone else to get hurt.”

Anyone who saw the events leading up to the collision this morning, or has relevant dash cam footage that could aid investigators with this probe, should contact the BCHP Chilliwack branch at 604-702-4039.

(Original story: Sept. 5 @ 9 am) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) is currently closed through the Fraser Canyon.

DriveBC reports a vehicle incident around two kilometres south of Yale, which has the major route shut down in both directions with no detour available.

A video shared by the Skilled Truckers Canada Facebook group shows that multiple vehicles were involved in the crash and a semi truck was engulfed in flames.

The post also indicates "possible fatalities," which have not been confirmed by officials but would result in a longer closure if that's the case.

Cpl. Dave Noon of the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service says the unit has been deployed to the scene of the crash.

He calls it a "serious vehicle incident" and notes that motorists should expect "significant delays for several hours."

For the time being, Hwy 1 joins the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) on the list of current highway closures.

Hwy 5 has been shut down since Wednesday afternoon due to the Mine Creek wildfire and there's no indication of when it will reopen to traffic.

That means Hwy 3 is the only major route currently open between the BC Interior and Lower Mainland.

The other available option for passenger vehicles is the Duffey Lake Road-Hwy 99 route through Whistler, but it’s not suitable for the majority of commercial traffic.

NowMedia will update this story as it develops.
