(UPDATE: Aug. 8 @ 5 am) - The highway reopened early on Wednesday evening.
(UPDATE: Aug. 7 @ 1:45 pm) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) is expected to remain closed east of Golden for a while.
The RCMP says emergency crews responded to a "serious" two-vehicle collision on the major route, at Emerald Lake Road near Field, around 12:20 pm.
"At the current time, multiple people are being treated for serious injuries," explained a short police statement. "The highway will remain closed for several hours in both directions."
Given the expected length of the delay, motorists should consider detouring through Radium Hot Springs by using Hwy 93 and Hwy 95, which adds around 90 minutes of travel time.
Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact the Golden-Field RCMP at 250-344-2221.
