UPDATE: Hwy 1 reopens east of Golden

(UPDATE: Aug. 8 @ 5 am) - The highway reopened early on Wednesday evening.

(UPDATE: Aug. 7 @ 1:45 pm) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) is expected to remain closed east of Golden for a while.

The RCMP says emergency crews responded to a "serious" two-vehicle collision on the major route, at Emerald Lake Road near Field, around 12:20 pm.

"At the current time, multiple people are being treated for serious injuries," explained a short police statement. "The highway will remain closed for several hours in both directions."

Given the expected length of the delay, motorists should consider detouring through Radium Hot Springs by using Hwy 93 and Hwy 95, which adds around 90 minutes of travel time.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact the Golden-Field RCMP at 250-344-2221.

(Original story: Aug. 7 @ 12:50 pm) - A vehicle incident has closed the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) in both directions east of Golden

Shortly before 12:30 pm, DriveBC said the highway was closed between the western boundary of Yoho National Park and Emerald Lake Road in Field and crews were on the scene.

An assessment is in progress, but unfortunately a detour is not available.

Major delays should be anticipated.

Highway cameras in the area show a long line of traffic has already started to form.

The next update from DriveBC is expected at 2 pm.
