(Original story: July 14 @ 4:30 pm): A tragic incident on the Trans-Canada Highway through the Fraser Canyon has resulted in one death and closed the highway in both directions.
The RCMP was called shortly after 9 am today for a report of a man in crisis, who allegedly told a loved one that “he intended to harm himself by driving off a bridge.”
An officer located the man who was driving his vehicle on Hwy 1 near Hells Gate.
“The man failed to stop and drove over an embankment with a significant drop,” explained an RCMP release. “He was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Hwy 1 remains closed at this time as the Lower Mainland RCMP Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstructionist Service investigates the scene.
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia has also been called in to investigate the incident and determine whether police actions contributed to the man’s death.
As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
