(UPDATE: Aug. 27 @ 4 pm) - The RCMP has provided a little more information on the crash that shut down the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) for several hours on Tuesday.
According to police, the early investigation suggests that a semi "struck a portion of the McDonald snow shed," which pushed it into oncoming traffic where it collided with an oncoming SUV.
Emcon Services Inc. shared a photo of the crash scene Tuesday afternoon and there were reports that only one vehicle was involved in the crash. However, the SUV involved was positioned behind the mangled semi in the provided photo.
Police say the occupants of both vehicles suffered "minor injuries" and impairment is not believed to have been a factor.
Any witnesses to the accident, or those with relevant dash cam footage that could assist investigators, us asked to contact the Revelstoke RCMP at 25-837-5255.
(UPDATE: Aug. 26 @ 6:45 pm) - Traffic is moving on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) once again.
The highway had been shut down in both directions between Revelstoke and Golden due to a semi crash.
Emcon Services Inc., the road contractor responsible for that section of Hwy 1, reports that the route reopened at 6:25 pm.
Both Emcon and DriveBC advise motorists to expect some delays this evening as the backlog of traffic gets through the area.
(UPDATE: Aug. 26 @ 5 pm) - DriveBC says there has been no change in the status of the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1).
The vital transportation route remains shut down in both directions between Revelstoke and Golden after a semi crashed earlier this afternoon.
In a social media reply, DriveBC indicated that the estimated time of opening for Hwy 1 was 6 pm PT.
NowMedia will continue to monitor the closure and update this story once the road reopens.
(Original story: Aug. 26 @ 2:20 pm) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) is currently closed between Revelstoke and Golden.
Crews shut down the highway in both directions following a motor vehicle incident west earlier this afternoon.
A photo shared by Emcon Services Inc., the road contractor responsible for that stretch of Hwy 1, shows a mangled semi across both lanes of the highway.
However, the company says sources at the scene report that there were no serious injuries and it appears the semi was the only vehicle involved.
“Crews are working on clearing the wreckage and inspecting the damage. Follow DriveBC for updates,” the social media post from Emcon said.
“We suggest enjoying the summer hospitality that Revelstoke and Golden have to offer for a few hours instead of waiting on the highway.”
DriveBC says the crash happened around Jumping Creek Road, west of Rogers Pass, and an assessment is in progress.
NowMedia will update this story when the highway reopens.
