(Original story: May 29 @ 9 am) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) is currently closed in both directions between Revelstoke and Golden.
The closure is due to “landslide activity impacting the highway,” explains a social media statement from Parks Canada.
Reports of the debris flow near the Skunk Cabbage Day Use Area, around 25 kilometres east of Revelstoke, came in at 7 pm Thursday.
“Crews responded immediately and were able to mobilize geotechnical assessment before dark,” the Parks Canada statement explained.
“Warm daytime temperatures on Thursday combined with overnight precipitation have resulted in significant water flow through the area.”
Crews are working to further assess the situation this morning, as well as drain the area and clear debris to ensure the route is safe for travellers.
DriveBC anticipates Hwy 1 will not be closed for much longer and will provide its next update at 10 am.
