A major bridge replacement project will begin on Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon this fall.
BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Transit announced that the aging Sackum overhead bridge on the Trans-Canada Highway will be replaced.
The bridge is located about 22 kilometres east of Lytton and 13 km south of Spences Bridge.
The project will see the construction of a modern two-lane bridge that goes over the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) rail line.
The bridge will have a lifespan of about 75 years, according to the project website.
Other upgrades will include realignment of the highway north of the bridge.
According to the ministry, this realignment will remove a short passing lane that no longer meets standards and will create a smoother and wider curve in the highway.
The drainage system will also be upgraded to better manage heavy rain, the ministry said.
Traffic impacts are expected to be announced on DriveBC once work gets underway.
Enviro-Ex Contracting was awarded the $22.6 million contract.
Construction is scheduled to get underway this fall and will continue through to summer 2027.
The ministry said this project is part of broader efforts to enhance the safety and sustainability of the highway, which serves as one of the major routes between the Interior and the Lower Mainland.
Other works include repairs to Highway 1 at Tank Hill, which has been ongoing since the November 2021 floods.
