UPDATE: Pedestrian killed in Thursday morning Coquihalla crash

(UPDATE: April 3 at 12:10 pm): Police say the serious crash that closed the northbound lanes of the Coquihalla (Hwy 5) for several hours this morning was fatal.

Around 5:15 am, emergency crews responded to a report of a pedestrian having been struck by a vehicle on Hwy 5 near Kane Valley Road in Merritt.

“Despite lifesaving efforts, a male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene,” reads an RCMP press release.

“The vehicle involved was unable to avoid the collision and remained on scene. No criminality is suspected.”

All northbound Coquihalla traffic was stopped for several hours as crews attended the scene Thursday morning, but the highway has since fully reopened.

The RCMP, along with the BC Coroners Service, are investigating the incident and anyone with information is asked to call the Merritt RCMP at (250) 378-4262.


(UPDATE: April 3 at 9:20 am): Emergency crews remain at the scene of this morning’s serious crash on the Coquihalla.

According to an RCMP press release, the incident at Hwy 5 and Kane Valley Road is still being investigated and the Coquihalla’s northbound lanes will remain closed until further notice.


(Original story: April 3 at 8:55 am): Northbound traffic on the Coquihalla has come to a standstill after an early morning vehicle incident.

The incident occurred around 5:30 am and closed the northbound lanes between exit 250: Larson Hill and exit 276: Comstock Road.

According to DriveBC’s latest update, an assessment is in progress and an update is expected in the near future.
