A project to replace the aging Quartz Creek Bridge around 40 kilometres west of Golden will begin in the spring.
According to the provincial government, a new four-lane bridge crossing at Quartz Creek is part of the ongoing work on the widening of Hwy 1.
“Replacing the Quartz Creek Bridge and widening this part of the Trans-Canada Highway will improve driver safety while supporting trade and a strong regional economy,” said Catherine McKenna, Canada’s minister of infrastructure.
“Canada’s infrastructure plan invests in thousands of projects, creates jobs across the country and builds cleaner, more inclusive communities.”
The project will make the route safer for anyone using this stretch of Hwy 1, including commercial truck drivers carrying essential goods.
Along with the new four-lane bridge, the project will also include the widening of 4.4 kilometres of the two-lane highway to four lanes in the surrounding area.
“The Quartz Creek Bridge project will upgrade the reliability of the highway by improving safety and reducing incidents for people travelling in the region and benefiting businesses moving goods along this important trade corridor,” said Rob Fleming, BC’s minister of transportation.
“This project also brings good-paying jobs and the opportunity for local workers to be hired through the Community Benefits Agreement.”
Anyone travelling the route this spring or summer will notice the work and there could be small delays at times.
The construction site will have all the appropriate COVID-19 protocols and policies in place to keep everyone who’s working on the project.
