In the wake of the third homicide to occur in less than 12 months in the District of Sicamous, local officials have announced they are reaching out to the provincial government to address community concerns regarding the latest “unprecedented violent crime.”
On June 19, emergency crews were called to a mobile home park after receiving a report of an unresponsive woman.
Jo Ann Jackson was found in a driveway and after paramedics provided medical assistance, the 66-year-old was declared dead at the scene.
“There is understandable unrest in the community after learning that the individual arrested for Jackson’s manslaughter was released from custody after only 24 hours of being detained,” reads a news release from the District.
“We have been assured there is an undertaking, a promise made by the accused, to appear in court.”
The Southeast District Major Crime Unit is investigating the incident and protective measures have been implemented in the area, including an increased police presence and a 24-hour surveillance.
But, the community is seeking answers from the provincial government.
“This is the third homicide to be investigated in our community in less than 12 months,” added the news release.
“A formal meeting with the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General will be requested to address our community’s concerns regarding this unprecedented violent crime.”
The District added that police are seeking information to assist their investigation and to call 1-877-987-8477.
