Monday’s Toonie Day at Sun Peaks Resort was a record breaking success.
Over 4,600 people hit the slopes for a good cause. Ski and snowboard lovers were asked to bring a non-perishable donation and a toonie for the Kamloops Food Bank, in exchange for a lift ticket.
Sales Manager Aaron Weiss says it was the added generosity of patrons that made the day a record breaking success.
“There’s a lot of people who actually gave not only food and the toonies but also gave additional cheques on top of that. We saw $50 cheques, we saw $25 gift certificates to Superstore, $100 cheques from some people as well and it just goes a long way to support the cause,” said Weiss.
The event raised roughly $8,000 for the food bank. Weiss adds there were so many food donations, it was a struggle to haul the delivery into Kamloops.
“We actually didn’t have a truck large enough to tow the trailer because there was so much food. We actually had to upsize from a half ton to a three quarter ton truck in order to actually get the food down from Sun Peaks,” said Weiss.
Executive Director of the Kamloops Food Bank Bernadette Siracky says this is the largest donation Sun Peaks has made for Toonie Day.
“We’re just incredibly grateful to Sun Peaks, they make this really easy on us. They support us year round through different employee events, the corporation supports us, so we’re just very grateful that they give back at this time of year,” said Siracky. “This, by far, is the largest amount of food and amount of people who actually came to the hill on Toonie Day.”
Sun Peaks Resort hosts Toonie Day in the summer and winter in support of local charities.
