Human remains were recovered last week after a civilian reported the discovery near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal.
On Sept. 2, 2023 at about 9 am, the Victoria Coast Guard contacted Outer Gulf Island RCMP to request assistance.
A civilian vessel travelling West from Vancouver had called in and reported finding what they believed to be human remains in the water about 11 kilometres west of the ferry terminal.
Outer Gulf Island RCMP attended along with a crew from the Coast Guard. They arrived in the area shortly after 10 am.
The remains were confirmed to be human, and, with the assistance of West Coast Marine vessel Lindsay, police were able to recover the body.
BC Coroners service were contacted, and they have taken conduct of the file.
Police transported the remains to Sidney, and they were then taken to Victoria General Hospital, pending identification and autopsy to determine if possible the cause of death.
Police said the BC Coroners Service will be working closely with the RCMP Missing Persons Unidentified Human Remains unit to help identify the found remains.
