From tiny stage to Grand Opera: The rise of Carmen Harris

Carmen Harris, a name well-known in the local arts scene, has captivated audiences with her journey from a young prodigy to a celebrated opera singer. Her story is one of determination, talent, and the power of mentorship, as recounted in a recent episode of Voices Unleashed.

Harris’s journey began at the tender age of nine and a half when she persistently sought vocal training despite the limited opportunities for young voices in her community. Her early days were marked by a profound aptitude for singing and a determination that eventually led her to the studios of esteemed vocal coach Alexandra Babbel. Reflecting on those formative years, Harris says, "There wasn’t much going on in the scene as we do see now. It was such a blessing when [Babbel] finally relented."

Overcoming the challenges of a nascent local arts scene, Harris’s talent quickly shone through. She became a staple in productions at the Actor's Studio, where her performances left lasting impressions. "Some of my favourite moments are when you look out into the audience and see someone having a response," Harris recalls. These moments of connection, whether through golden age musical theatre or the grandeur of opera, have been integral to her artistic journey.

Harris’s academic path took her to the University of Manitoba, where she studied under Monica Huseman. She speaks fondly of Huseman, calling her "a wonderful soul." Her education continued with a full scholarship and a teaching assistantship at the University of Ottawa, where she studied with Christiane Riel. "Her drive for standards was also there, which is important," Harris notes, emphasizing the rigorous training that shaped her operatic skills.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to artists worldwide, and Harris was no exception. Navigating the lockdowns while based between Ottawa and Montreal, she and her partner found innovative ways to continue creating. Their tiny apartment became a creative haven, filled with the sounds of opera, jazz, and even bands rehearsing downstairs. "We just sort of tried to create every day," Harris says, highlighting the resilience and adaptability that kept her artistic spirit alive.

During the pandemic, Harris embraced virtual performances, transforming her living room into various settings for gigs. One notable experience was a contemporary opera project where she was asked to make her living room resemble a bar. This flexibility and creativity not only sustained her career during difficult times but also expanded her repertoire.

A versatile performer, Harris is known for her ability to traverse different musical genres. While she is a fully trained opera singer, regularly performing works by Haydn and Mozart, she also enjoys musical theatre and jazz. "If someone hires me for something and I think it is in my vocal wheelhouse, it is sort of my mandate to say, 'Let’s try it,'" she shares. This openness to diverse opportunities has been a hallmark of her career.

Currently, Harris is preparing for her role as Hansel in Hansel and Gretel with Manitoba Underground Opera, a production set in an art gallery with 20-foot projections. Following this, she will reprise her role in Sweeney Todd with the National Arts Centre. These roles reflect her dynamic range and commitment to her craft.

Looking ahead, Harris is enthusiastic about continuing to push the boundaries of her artistry. She encourages fellow artists to embrace the evolving nature of their work. "What you did five years ago may not be what you do today, but it’s just as valid," she asserts. Whether performing in intimate community settings or grand opera houses, Harris believes that every performance holds significant value.

Carmen Harris’ journey is a testament to the power of persistence, adaptability, and the unwavering pursuit of artistic excellence. Her story, filled with memorable performances and the joy of connecting with audiences, continues to inspire both emerging and seasoned artists alike.
