After nearly 2,500 lightning strikes hit the Kamloops Fire Centre, the BC Wildfire Service has been dealing with a number of spot fires in the Interior.

Three small fires around the Kamloops area were started by lightning on Friday.

The Watching Creek fire, northwest of Kamloops in the Lac Du Bois Grasslands Protected Area, is estimated at 1.50 hectares.

A small 0.01 hectare fire north of Kamloops, along Highway 5 and north of Blackpines, was also caused by lightning Friday night.

A fire southeast of Logan Lake and just north of Nicola Lake is estimated at about 5 hectares.

A small 0.01 hectare fire east of Logan Lake started on July 30.

(UPDATE: July 29 @ 5:10 pm) - The BC Wildfire Service says the Cornwall Lookout wildfire is now under control.

The Minabarriet Creek wildfire remains at 16.6 hectares, while the Cornwall Creek wildfire has grown to four hectares.

"These fires are receiving fire suppression from a 20-person unit crew, two initial attack crews, aerial resources, two water tenders and a bulldozer," the BCWS noted.

Firefighters are also responding to a pair of new fires in that area that have been dubbed the Red Point wildfire and Durand Creek wildfire.

The Durand Creek wildfire reached 0.2 hectares in size but is now classified as under control, while the Red Point wildfire is spot sized but still out of control.

(Original story: July 29 @ 11:45 am) - The BC Wildfire Service is responding to a trio of new wildfires in close proximity that sparked near Ashcroft on Thursday night.

All three fires are within 1.6 kilometres of each other, 11.5 km south of Ashcroft and around 3 km west of Hwy 1.

The BCWS has dubbed them the Minaberriet Creek wildfire (16.6 hectares), the Cornwall Creek wildfire (2 hectares) and the Cornwall Lookout wildfire (spot sized).

A crew and an officer responded to the two larger fires Thursday night and the spot-sized Cornwall Creek wildfire was discovered early today by crews.

“One five-person initial attack crew, a helicopter and air tankers are responding. Two water tenders and a bulldozer are providing support,” noted the BCWS.

“An additional helicopter with a three-person rappel crew is en route. Resources are being shared between all incidents.”

The BCWS added that rank one and rank two fire behaviour is being observed and promised further updates if they're "deemed necessary."
