UPDATE: Evacuation orders rescinded for properties near Lillooet wildfire

(UPDATE: Sept. 6 @ 11:40 am) – More accurate mapping on a wildfire south of Lillooet has resulted in a smaller estimate of 498 hectares.

The Downton Creek wildfire was estimated at 674 hectares on Monday.

As a result, an evacuation order that was issued by the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District on Sept. 3 was rescinded Monday evening.

However, an evacuation alert remains in effect for the following properties and areas:

  • District Lot 2343, Lillooet District

  • District Lot 4361, Lillooet District

  • District Lot 4361- Lot A, Lillooet District

  • Lot 1 and Lot 2 in District Lot 4360, Lillooet District

  • Cottonwood Recreation Site EC1576

  • Cinnamon Recreation Site REC1874

  • Gott Recreation Site REC1872

  • Rogers Recreation Site REC1568

  • Seton Ridge Recreation Trail REC4684

  • All other areas as outlined on the attached map


Fire information officer Shaelee Stearns said that crew members working in lower elevations had completed objectives to prevent the fire from spreading.

Stearns said that although the fire is smaller than originally recorded, it is still burning out of control.

On Tuesday, there is one helicopter and response officer on site. They are working to monitor the fire and determine next steps.

This was discovered on Aug. 21 about 15 kilometres south of Lillooet and is believed to have been started by lightning.

(UPDATE: Sept. 5 @ 12:45 pm) – A wildfire southwest of Lillooet is now estimated at 674 hectares.

In an update provided Sunday, the Downton Creek wildfire remains out of control.

The blaze was discovered on Aug. 21 and is suspected to have been caused by lightning.

Several evacuation orders and alerts were issued by the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District over the weekend. They remain in effect.

Meanwhile, a smaller fire northeast of Lytton remains stable and is still estimated at about four hectares.

The Lower Arthur Seat fire was discovered on Saturday and is believed to be human-caused.

(Original story: Sept. 4 @ 9:15 am) – Crews with the BC Wildfire Service are busy with several new wildfires that have started in the Interior this weekend.

A new blaze was detected about 15 kilometres south of Lillooet.

The Downton Creek FSR wildfire is believed to have been caused by lightning.

The fire is estimated at about 200 hectares and has prompted an evacuation order from the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District.

Properties in electoral area B were ordered to leave late Saturday afternoon.

Due to the "potential danger to life and health," an evacuation alert was also issued for the following properties:

  • District Lot 4359

  • Lot 2 of District Lot 4360

  • All other properties as outlined on the attached map.


The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District is encouraging evacuees who need emergency accommodations to register for Emergency Support Services through the Canadian Red Cross by calling 1-888-800-6493.

Wildfire officials also implemented an area restriction order for the vicinity of this fire.

The Cottonwood, Cinnamon, Gott Creek, Rogers Creek and Seton Ridge recreation sites have all been closed due to the wildfire.

Another fire is burning out of control 20 kilometres northeast of Lytton Saturday afternoon.

The Lower Arthur Seat wildfire is estimated at about four hectares in size and classified as out of control.

According to the BCWS, the fire is believed to have been started by a person.

A crew of air tankers, helicopters and ground personnel responded Saturday evening
