Newly discovered wildfires reported burning out of control in northern BC

The BC Wildfire Service says four new wildfires are burning out of control in the Prince George Fire Centre.

It says all four fires, which were discovered Thursday and range in size from one to 80 hectares, are suspected to be caused by lightning.

The service also says another fire that was discovered Thursday in the Southeast Fire Centre near Nelson is also burning out of control.

It says about 40 fires are currently burning across the province, with 32 per cent of them started by lightning, 66 per cent are human-caused and three per cent are unknown.

A provincial situation report posted on Tuesday says the northeast region is the driest part of BC, with high to extreme fire warnings near the Alberta border.

An updated report posted Friday says winds and patchy precipitation are expected, bringing some moisture to the Kamloops and Southeast Fire Centres this weekend, while other areas of the province will remain dry
