Pair of prescribed burns within Kamloops city limits could begin as early as next week

The BC Wildfire Service continues to be busy with off-season wildfire mitigation work and it will come to Kamloops as early as next week.

The City of Kamloops will receive support from the BCWS and Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc as it conducts a pair of prescribed burns within city limits over the coming weeks.

One will be in the Rose Hill area covering up to eight hectares and the other will be in Peterson Creek Nature Park covering around 17 hectares.

“The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as March 5, 2025,” the City explained in a release.

“Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.”

Smoke may be visible around Kamloops and from surrounding areas, as well as to motorists travelling along Hwy 1, Hwy 5 or Hwy 5A.

According to the City, key goals of the prescribed burns include:

  • Helping to restore forest health and a properly functioning ecosystem
  • Removing and reducing build-up of overgrown sagebrush in the area
  • Removing the growth of invasive species in the area
  • Providing a cross training opportunity and encouraging interagency cooperation
