A small but impactful wildfire in West Vancouver is now considered held.
The fire just off Hwy 99, less than a kilometre from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, was discovered shortly before 1 pm on Monday.
BC Wildfire Service crews were called in to assist West Vancouver Fire & Rescue with the small fire, which was initially estimated at three hectares in size and highly visible to the public.
Ground crews and air tankers attacked the interface fire quickly and efficiently, and were able to get it held after around six hours.
While the fire is not yet considered under control, the held status means that it’s unlikely to spread beyond predetermined boundaries under current conditions.
Hwy 99 was shut down when the fire was discovered and it remains that way early this morning. Motorists are able to detour around the closure using Horseshoe Bay Drive.
According to the BCWS, the fire is suspected to be human-caused.
