Blazers' Jermaine Loewen makes history after being drafted by the Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars made a historic draft selection on Saturday.

The team made Kamloops Blazers’ forward Jermaine Loewen their seventh-round pick, 199th overall in the 2018 NHL entry draft.

With that, Loewen became the first-ever Jamaican-born player to be selected in an NHL draft.

The 20-year-old was born in Jamaica before being adopted by a Winnipeg family at a young age.

He’s played his entire four-year WHL career with the Blazers and took a huge step forward in his development this past season.

In 66 games, Loewen led the team in both goals and points with 36 and 64 respectively.

Dylan Ferguson, Blazers’ goalie and the Stars seventh-round pick a year ago, tweeted his congratulations.

“This is one hell of a pick. Hardest working guy I’ve met. Congrats Mainer!!”

Loewen was the only Blazer taken in this year’s NHL entry draft.
