The BC Sports Hall of Fame announced they will receive $560,000 in funds from the Department of Canadian Heritage towards the digitization of their Indigenous Sports Gallery.
The gallery was established in 2018 and is the largest single permanent exhibition dedicated to Indigenous athletes and sports in the world.
The collections of the gallery will be made accessible online through the heritage project over the next three years, ensuring the stories and artifacts of incredible Indigenous athletes are accessible to all.
“The BC Sports Hall of Fame spurs curiosity in British Columbia’s rich sporting heritage by preserving and showcasing one of Canada's largest sport heritage artefact collections,” said Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez. “Thanks to the vision and dedication of many partners, this virtual gallery will offer a unique, interactive experience allowing Canadians to deepen their knowledge and honour the legacy of Indigenous sport culture and history in Canada.”
The Indigenous Sport Gallery is located at the BC Sports Hall of Fame inside BC Plaace in Vancouver. It celebrates the rich history and many contributions to sport by more than 40 Indigenous athletes, teams, coaches, builders and volunteers in BC.
