Week 17 of the CFL season is set to get underway on Friday and with it, the competing clubs will wear Indigenous-designed logos to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
“The nine team logos were created by local Indigenous artists to honour the game’s close ties with Indigenous communities across the country, and to underscore the league’s commitment to recognizing the past while focusing on a path forward centred on awareness, education and action,” wrote the CFL.
The designs will appear on players' helmets, in-stadium programming and on TV broadcasts.
A portion of the proceeds from merchandise sold that features the logos will be donated to local Indigenous groups, organizations or programming, according to the league.
The BC Lions are at home against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the first 10,000 fans will receive a newly designed orange T-shirt, featuring the artwork of Corrine Hunt and Tanner Timothy.

“The design is a stylized rendition of the Lions’ primary logo. It brings to the forefront the Indigeneity of BC through an unmistakably Indigenous art style,” stated the description of the BC Lions logo.
“It is meant to evoke strength and unity among all those wearing the design, creating a shared sense of kindness, caring and collective energy.”
Kick off for the Lions and Ticats game is at 7:30 pm on Friday.
The Calgary Stampeders are on a bye week and featured their logo last week against the Montreal Alouettes.
