Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime stays alive with third–round US Open upset

One Canadian remains in the hunt for a 2025 US Open singles title.

Félix Auger-Aliassime is moving on to the fourth round after defeating the third-seeded Alexander Zverev, marking Auger-Aliassime’s first grand slam win over a top-five player.

The Canadian, who is seeded 25th overall, will now face 15th seed Andrey Rublev for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Zverev got off to a quick start in Saturday’s match and took the first set 6-4 as Auger-Aliassime committed 10 unforced errors.

On the brink of losing a second consecutive set and playing in a tiebreaker, Auger-Aliassime held off his German opponent to nab the set, tying the game.

Auger-Aliassime then took the third set 6-4 before winning the fourth set by the same score to secure the win.

The Canadian will have a tough task ahead of himself as he has a 1-7 record against his next opponent, including a pair of losses from this season.

Auger-Aliassime will return to the court on Monday for his fourth-round match, which does not currently have a scheduled time.

Saturday also saw Canadian Denis Shapovalov win the first set of his third-round match against the world’s number-one player, Jannik Sinner. But the Italian proved to be too much and proceeded to win three consecutive sets to take the match.
