“We're not going into this game thinking we're going to play passive,” Canada coach Jesse Marsch told reporters on Saturday. “We're fit, we're strong, we're ready and we're committed, and I'm excited for what that will mean for our performance.”
Canada enters the game as heavy favourites after winning the group stage for the first time since 2009, securing seven points from wins over Honduras and El Salvador to go with a draw against Curaçao.
Meanwhile, Guatemala rode wins over Jamaica and Guadeloupe to a second-place finish in Group C, losing a 1-0 decision to group winners Panama.
Panama has already bowed out of the competition in the knockout round, falling to Honduras on penalty kicks on Saturday. The other quarterfinal matchup in that part of the bracket saw Mexico dispose of Saudi Arabia 2-0.
While Mexico and Honduras will go head-to-head in one semifinal on Wednesday, Canada is hoping to advance and renew acquaintances with a long-standing rival in the other semi.
A win over Guatemala would put Canada up against the winner of today’s other quarterfinal that features the United States and Costa Rica.
Today’s match between Canada and Guatemala will kick off from Minneapolis at 1 pm PT. The US and Costa Rica will follow at 4 pm PT. TSN will broadcast both games.
Canada is looking for three more wins to claim the country’s second Gold Cup ever. Canada’s triumph in 2000 was the only time the tournament has been won by a country other than the US or Mexico.
