While the product on the ice hasn’t been great in recent years, the Vancouver Canucks never seem to miss when it comes to special jersey nights.
From Pride Night to Diwali Night to Black History Night and everything in between, the Canucks have put out a line of incredible commemorative warmup jerseys that always hit the right notes.
The latest creation is the First Nations Celebration jersey, which will be worn during warm up of the Canucks’ First Nations Celebration game against the Minnesota Wild on March 2.
“Designed by Jay Odjick, cousin of Gino Odjick, the jersey weaves elements that honour Gino’s legacy and Jay’s own First Nations heritage,” the club explained.
It features a hybrid of the team’s popular skate logo and the thunderbird, a powerful symbol to many First Nations, including the Anishinabe and Coast Salish, which represents strength, power and protection.
The shoulder patches are a medicine wheel, another important symbol for many First Nations that represents health and balance in all things.
This particular medicine wheel has Gino Odjick’s number 29 in the middle, along with eight features that signify his eight seasons with the Canucks.
The jersey’s numbers incorporate a traditional Anishinabe design often used on Pow Wow regalia or in traditional beading.
You can purchase the warmup jersey, or a shirt or hoodie featuring the logo, through the Vanbase website, but they certainly are not cheap.
Other special themed Canucks jerseys that have come out this year are available through Vanbase as well (again, not cheap).
