Canucks will wear Pride jerseys this weekend, ending days of speculation

There has been plenty of controversy and conversation surrounding NHL pride nights in recent weeks.

In January, Russian defenceman Ivan Provorov refused to wear the Philadelphia Flyers’ Pride jerseys during pregame warmup.

More recently, Canadian-born players James Reimer, Eric Staal and Marc Staal have done the same, citing their religious beliefs.

The uncertainty behind it all led to the Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild, who both have Russian players on their roster, to opt out of wearing Pride jerseys entirely.

It all led to plenty of speculation on what the Canucks would do with the club’s Pride Night approaching on Friday,

With multiple Russians on the roster and coaching staff, many were starting to wonder if the team would choose to opt out of wearing Pride jerseys like the Blackhawks and Wild.

Last night, the Canucks put an end to that speculation by unveiling their Pride Night plans, which include wearing Pride warmup jerseys designed by local artist Christina Hryc.

The club will also make a $20,000 donation on behalf of the Canucks for Kids Fund to QMUNITY, a non-profit organization in Vancouver that supports and assists the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Michael Doyle, president of Canucks Sports and Entertainment’s business operations, says the opportunity to celebrate the 2SLGBTQIA+ community is very important.

"Pride night and all the incredible activities that highlight this evening, is special for a number of reasons,” he said.

“Besides raising awareness and understanding, it also lets our fanbase know that everyone is welcome here at Rogers Arena. Our club believes strongly in diversity and inclusion, and we look forward to celebrating these core values with our community."

Beyond the Pride jerseys and donation, fans can also expect a Pride Party on the Plaza outside the area on Friday afternoon and more celebrations during the game.

As for the game, the Canucks will take on the Calgary Flames with puck drop set for 7 pm.
