Draisaitl breaks NHL record as Oilers even Stanley Cup Final in OT

It was looking like it was going to be another rough loss for Edmonton on Thursday, but the Oilers turned things around and rattled off four unanswered scores before going to OT and taking the 5-4 win, tying the Stanley Cup Final 2-2.

<who> Photo Credit: Edmonton Oilers/XThe Florida Panthers controlled the first period with a bit of help from the Oilers as Matthew Tkachuk managed a pair of power-play goals before Anton Lundell scored, ending Stuart Skinner’s night in the net.

Down 3-0 and with Calvin Pickard in the net to start the second period, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored in the opening minutes of the frame to put the Oilers on the board.

Not long after, Darnell Nurse made it a one-goal game with his third goal of the postseason.

The Oilers had momentum, and before the middle frame could end, Vasily Podkolzin tied the game with a backhand shot.

With less than seven minutes left in the third period, Jake Walman put the Oilers ahead for the first time in the match with a slap shot.

The Oilers attempted to keep Florida off the board, but the Panthers pushed through and Sam Reinhart tied the game in the final minute, forcing overtime.

Both teams went back and forth in the extra frame, but it was the game one hero who ended the match as Leon Draisaitl’s pass was redirected into the net, sealing the win for Edmonton.

The goal was Draisaitl’s fourth OT score of the playoffs and set a new NHL record for most overtime goals in a single postseason by a player.

With the series now tied 2-2, the Oilers will look to take a 3-2 lead at home on Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 pm PDT.
