For baseball fans, it should really be a holiday.
Although the 2025 season officially started with two games between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs in Japan just over a week ago, today is Opening Day in North America.

All but two teams will be in action throughout the day, with 14 games on the schedule with first pitches scheduled between 12:05 pm and 7:10 pm PST.
The Opening Day schedule is essentially bookended by the two teams who the majority of British Columbians cheer for – the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners.

The Blue Jays begin their season at home as they welcome in the Baltimore Orioles to Rogers Centre early this afternoon. It’s José Berríos getting his third opening day start in the past four years for Toronto, with first pitch scheduled for 12:07 pm PST.
The Mariners will send Logan Gilbert to the mound for their home opener at 7:10 pm PST against the Athletics, who will counter with Luis Severino.

It’s just the Athletics this year, with no city name, as the team begins the first of three transitional years between their former home in Oakland and their future home in Las Vegas. For the next three seasons, the A’s will play their home games at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, but they will not be called the Sacramento Athletics.
As always, Opening Day marks the start of a long and busy MLB schedule over the spring and summer months, as teams battle to be a part of the post-season in October.

The Mariners are essentially even money to make the playoffs at -105, while bookies are not as confident in the Blue Jays to make the post-season with their odds listed at +250.
The defending champion Dodgers are heavy favourites to win it all again. Their odds to lift the trophy again in the fall are +225, well ahead of the next teams in the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees at +900.
