With the Winnipeg Jets' loss on Saturday and the Toronto Maple Leafs' loss on Sunday, the Edmonton Oilers are the last Canadian team in the NHL playoffs.
The Maple Leafs were up against the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, and looking get over the hump and advance to the conference finals after a decade of playoff woes.
But the Panthers had other plans and posted three goals in the second period of Sunday’s game seven.
Max Domi opened the third period with his third goal of the playoffs before the Panthers immediately responded to regain their three-goal lead.
Sam Reinhart then added a goal before Brad Marchand got on the scoreboard and continued to terrorize the Leafs fans.
With the win, Marchand became the first player in NHL history to win five winner-take-all games against the same franchise.
The Panthers will now face the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final, while the Edmonton Oilers take on the Dallas Stars.
The Oilers defeated the Stars in six games last year and will look to repeat that outcome in an attempt to book their second consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final.
Game one between Edmonton and Dallas is set for 5 pm PDT on Wednesday.
