The biennial event sees the United States take on an International Team, featuring the rest of the world minus Europe, in a series of men’s golf matches, much like the Ryder Cup.
“The people of Canada are some of the most loyal and passionate sports fans in the world, and given the overwhelming success of the Presidents Cup in 2007, it was a natural next step for the event to return to The Royal Montreal in 2024,” said Jay Monahan, PGA Tour commissioner.
As Monahan mentioned, the 2007 Presidents Cup was held at The Royal Montreal Golf Club, with the American team winning by a margin of 19.5 to 14.5.
One of the highlights was Canadian Mike Weir defeating Tiger Woods in a single’s match on the final day of competition.
When Weir made a putt to win the match one-up, the home crowd erupted in cheers.
Since Weir, the only two Canadians to be a part of the International Team in the Presidents Cup are Graham DeLaet and Adam Hadwin.
"I was very proud to be part of the Presidents Cup as a player in 2007, and to see it come back after being so well-supported the first time just speaks to how passionate we are in Canada about golf,” Weir said.
“The fan turnout was tremendous, and as a Canadian I am very proud to have the Presidents Cup come back.”
Unfortunately for those three Canadians and the rest of the International Team members over the last 10 competitions, the International Team hasn’t won a Presidents Cup since 1998.
The 2022 Presidents Cup, which was originally supposed to be held in 2021 before COVID-19, will be held at Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
